Stroll down any bookstore’s aisle on Business books and you’ll no doubt see more glossy covers on “Leadership” than you can count. Folks, Leadership is a hot topic that’s been here since the beginning and is here to stay. Google “Leadership quotes” and you’ll see wisdom from Aristotle and inspiring words from Athletic coaches. It’s a mixed bag for certain, but the truth and principles of Leadership are all founded in the same fundamental elements. Slice it, carve it, study it, the truth of Leadership starts in the seeds of Character. This will greatly affect your success in staffing solutions.
Character is not a sexy topic any more, but its relevance impacts all of us, daily. You can’t run a family, a Church, a Business or a Country without repercussions if you lack Character. As a Leader in business we are well served to remember that people make decisions on who to trust, who to follow and who to serve based on their assessment of Character. In today’s business climate Top Talent is highly sought after in every sector. Candidates with key skills and qualifications are virtually never without multiple job prospects, and they are an intelligent and highly discerning group. They evaluate offers holistically- they command competitive salaries but do not make the decision on which offer to accept entirely based on salary. They consider WHO they will be working with, WHAT they are tasked and challenged to accomplish, the RESOURCES they will be provided to accomplish their missions, and whether the position is INTERESTING and will help them take their expertise to the next level.
As the Leader, your character is critical in answering the “WHO”. You simply must quickly realize that a Top Performer is coming to work WITH YOU and FOR YOU. So You matter. A lot. (And it matters “A LOT” to you as a Leader in your own career as well. Just try getting things done with a mediocre team. Try getting promoted without people performing on your team, supporting you. It’s no surprise that those who Hire best, end up higher… hmm. That sounds kinda catchy… maybe a new blog title? : )
As a recruiter, I’ve found that we can adjust the salary ranges offered, we can add a perk here or there, we can expedite an annual review… there are a number of creative suggestions we can recommend to make an offer more attractive when the Top Performer is evaluating several prospective employers. The single most powerful motivator though, is the personal connection and professional presence that the Hiring Manager conveys throughout the Interview process. Simply put: You are in control of the Character and Leadership you project. If you are not an inspiring, resourceful, honest and compelling Leader~ you need to change.
